Turner from the Tate : AGSA preview talk
As part of the Back to Burra launch on Sunday December 16 2012 we are pleased to announce this special presentation by David O’Connor of the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Turner from the Tate: The Making of a Master, a presentation of highlights of the J.M.W. Turner works of art to be included in this significant exhibition, which opens at the AGSA on 8 February.
Many of you would know Turner as the greatest British landscape painter in history whose work has influenced generations of artists. This exhibition which has been co-curated by Jane Messenger, Curator of European art at the AGSA, looks at the development of Turners practice – from an example of his first work, exhibited as a 16 year old at the prestigious Royal Academy through to featuring 1 of the last 4 works he was working on at the time of his death.
This sweeping exhibition will encompass more than 160 works on paper (watercolours) and canvas (oils) demonstrating how Turner used the mediums to advance his approach to landscape, finally producing large amorphous fields of colour.
Turner – the Makings of a Master draws from the finest and most comprehensive collection of the artist’s work – the Turner Bequest. There is arguably no greater insight into the working techniques of a great artist than this unique collection, bequeathed to the people of Britain after Turner’s death in 1851 and held by the Tate.

Lessons from the Watercolour Masters: Turner, Constable and the Golden Age of British Watercolour
Saturday 9 February & Sunday 10 February (two day workshop) 10am – 4pm
Artist Tony Smibert is collaborating with TATE gallery in London to rediscover Turner’s techniques and is an expert in the field of watercolour. This practical two day workshop will provide participants with an introduction to and unique insight into Turner’s practice and those of his contemporaries.

MASTERCLASS: Painting Like Turner: the Great Watercolour Techniques.
Monday 11 February & Tuesday 12 February (two day workshop) 10 am – 4pm
Artist Tony Smibert is a Visiting Artist Researcher at Tate working with Senior Conservation Scientist Dr Joyce Townsend to rediscover Turner’s painting techniques. This master-class will explain Turner’s colour harmonies, studio and en plein air approach and be of great value to artists, historians, curators and collectors. Prior experience of watercolour is necessary.

JMW Turner – the early years
Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 March 10am – 4pm
Artist, Arthur Phillips leads a workshop exploring the practical skills that underpinned Turner’s early career – drawing of scenery and architectural forms and exploration of watercolour techniques such as washes, dry brush, glazing and tonal structuring.

Texture, Tone and Glazes
Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 March 10am – 4pm
Artist Nona Burden presents an oil painting workshop focusing on Turner’s innovative techniques , his use of colour, texture, palette knife, glazes and luminosity all of which are so apparent in Turner’s oil paintings. Some prior experience with oil painting recommended.

Into the light
Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 April 10am – 4pm
In this workshop, artist, Arthur Phillips examines the late works of J.M.W Turner, his mastery of materials and unconventional techniques, to produce his final vision of light filled and transcendent paintings.

Out & about
Saturday 11 May 10am – 3pm
Join artist Annalise Rees on a Turner inspired mini-grand tour along the Torrens River landscape, stopping at special locations to sketch the many features of the linear parkway. Bring your own bike or hire one for free from Adelaide City Bikes (8168 9999). We begin with a guided tour of the exhibition before commencing the sketching tour.
Fee: $60, $50 Members, include exhibition ticket, sketch book and watercolour pencil kit provided. Refreshments and lunch not included. Limited 15 participants.
