Portrait Competition – Opening 2011

Our most recent event was the opening on Saturday evening April 2nd of the Burra Regional Art Gallery Portrait Competition, by artist John Millard of Crystal Brook. He had a very difficult job choosing among the high standard of entries.

The Open Category was won by Penwortham artist Chris Alway with her portrait “Lilly”, carried out in pastel. The subject of the portrait is the daughter of a friend and painted as a commission.

The new category “Goyder Greats” was won by Glenys Christopher with her watercolour painting “The Boss”.

The Photography Prize was awarded to photographer Kaye-Leigh Cunningham, for a masterly study of her young daughter.

A Merit Award was made out to Roslyn Batten for her portrait “Darryl”, a well known “great” of Burra.

The exhibition continues until April 27th and the gallery is open between 1 and 4pm.

While visiting the gallery, visitors will be treated to the Edithburgh Artists’ exhibition “Sense of Place”, a show running for another month thanks to “luck” and popular demand.

The Bence Room has a mix a local and regional art that works well together and extends down the Corridor Gallery to our pride and joy – the historic S.T. Gill watercolour paintings of Burra, painted in 1846.

And after that …

7.30pm Friday April 29th is the opening date for Burra Quilters’ exhibition in Burra Regional Art Gallery. Their two yearly cycle coincides with the Burra Antique Fair, an event to write home about. Make a weekend of it, bring the caravan or find some accommodation hereabouts, it will be well worth the effort for all antique, collectables and quilt lovers.
