Jake Novick – Shadow Lines

Review by Kate Catchlove:

On first glance, when entering the Bence room where Jake Novick’s work is displayed, the impression is one of deep sombreness and awe. I am instantly reminded of the Rothko Chapel with its melancholy and sense of loss but when I look deeper into the images, the effect becomes one of being transported to another world. The landscapes, while being specific in their location, evoke dimly lit yet familiar dreamscapes that are the stage on which internal dramas of the psyche are played out. The fine line of light at the crest of a darkening horizon, the dense neutrals. Wondering and guessing at what lies within the shadow world, one is simultaneously left with the feeling of deep understanding and identification. In Shadow Lines, Jake generously presents us with a mesmerising collection of introspective artworks that effortlessly connect with the viewer.

Exploring the notion of loss and desire. Novick examines his internal landscape linking his past with the present, concepts of faith, belonging, connection, memory, identity, knowing and unknowing. Giving expression and shape to deeply personal symbolism and iconography. Burra Gallery 25 March to 25 April 2021
