BURRA REGIONAL ART GALLERY
December 2014
Showing a marvellous mix of 2D image-making techniques, this is a stimulating exhibition and fundraiser for the gallery. When it comes to the point, “the books must balance”. However, this intriguing display of artworks is the best surprise of all.
Watercolours by Janet Eason – note the amazing “Misty Morning, Batad” hanging next to the entry (on the other side of the wall two of three oils by Len Bence), Haley O’Shea’s country life impressions much appreciated by viewers for the splashy technique, carefully observed detail and touch of humour, Maxine Donald’s impressive “Across the Torrens” and jewel-like “Cyclamen”, Heather Parker’s “Windfarm, Hallett”, “NE Pastoral” and “Panarmittee Creek”, and Burra’s own Nan Annell’s “Autumn Leaves” and “Calla Lilies”.
And then there are the always-popular paintings by Julie Wilson.
Here are remarkable works in coloured pencil by Janys Asser, and Jess Crawford’s mixed media young ladies with appealing titles like “Let us Lay in the Sun” and “All the Answers Lie Close to Your Heart”.
Take time to closely inspect Lynda Fanshaw’s works, including “Grumpy Old Galah” in colour pencil and graphite, and Moira Lee’s delightful pastel “On the Murray” and small acrylic paintings “Barb’s Place, Point Clinton” and “On the Ledge, West Cape”.
Master of visual representation Charles Mace shows works in watercolour, oil and pastel with intriguing titles like “Double Headed” and “King of the Heap”. Gerald Moore’s “Mallee Scrub, Black Rock” and “Sheoak and Boulders” are most appealing, as are Jeanette Grosset’s “Poppies” and two maritime works “The Fleet’s In” and “Dwarfed by an Ocean Liner”.
Pen and ink drawings by the late Ken Pickard will appeal to fans of the old township of Terowie, as will Bud Stephenson’s semi abstract acrylic paintings with titles “Out of the Blue” and “Drought’s Broken”.
A variety of works have come off the wall to hang in Burra Gallery, and Christmas bargains are to be found among them. A hand coloured copper etching by Edward Bouverie Hoyton, limited edition and artist proof prints by Jeremy Boot, Jacqueline Hicks student Carolyn Edwards’ “Woman”, two lovely Rob Wellington oils “The Bike Ride” and “Gully View”, prints by Dianne Longley “Navajo Sun” and “Navajo Moon”, delightful oils by George Tetlow “Seascape” and “Burnt Summer”, Barbara Zerbini’s “Figurehead” and lino print “Bachelor Bird” by Rita Hall.
There’s much more, including a collection of nostalgic commercial prints in original frames of the 50s and 60s.
Grateful thanks are due to BRAG artists and local residents who have supported this exhibition to ensure its success.
