ALICE BLANCH: A SHIFTING STILLNESS

FEBRUARY 14 — MARCH 15 2020

LAUNCH Saturday FEBRUARY 15 @ 5.30pm

“As human beings we map the landscape. We trace and plot the counters of the mountains, the depths of the valleys, the point of contact between the ocean and the land’s edge. We then use these maps to orientate ourselves:there’s a comfort and security in knowing exactly where we are in relation to everything that is around us. But in reality the landscape is constantly shifting: it’s not this permanent fixture that we believe it to be. The movement happens on a scale and a rate that we are oblivious to most of the time. During the blink of our existence the landscape might shift in the slightest manner, going unnoticed to us. But there are shifts, and these shifts accumulate to create a river of motion and change in the surface this planet. Under our feet there is a fine dance underway between the elements, an ancient dance of pushing, pulling, morphing and forming.

‘A Shifting Stillness’ is an ode to the changing nature of the earth: exploring the notion that all the elements of life are on a constant course of change. Knowing that not even the land we rely on so fundamentally is exempt from this process can bring a great perspective to our daily lives. Learning from the land we can be more accepting of the change that is happening in our own lives and find stability and stillness within its constant flow.”
